Groups of Twelve Versus 5 X 5

There are different models used to develop leaders and, of course, we are not opposed to other models.  There is a significant difference in the groups of twelve and the traditional 5 x 5 model that we formerly used at Bethany.

The groups of twelve and the 5 X 5 have the same objectives, but different models.

The focus of the Principle of 12 model is to build a cell to 12 individuals and then help each individual become fruitful in the Lord.  The 5 X 5 model has a goal of developing one intern leader at a time per cell.  Each cell then splits into two cells, and the intern takes half of the group and begins a new cell.

We found that this was not working for us at Bethany.  New cells would many times die shortly after they were started, and many felt that the main idea was to multiply cells instead of developing long-lasting, healthy relationships.

The Principle of 12 model resolved several issues for us.  First, it allowed for cell members to continue together for an indefinite period of time.  This helped us work with certain individuals until their characters were molded and shaped.

One year is not long enough to see an individual develop in character.  The traditional model brought people up and shipped them out before they were totally healed, delivered, and developed.

In the Principle of 12 structure, a leader forms his group of twelve and then has as a goal to bring each of his twelve into a healthy relationship in the Lord.  The Encounters and School of Leaders are tools that help leaders develop their people, but ultimately it does not do everything.  Leaders must get to know their cell members and mentor them and walk with them until there are signs of spiritual health.

What are the signs?  Signs of spiritual health are fruitfulness of the Spirit, gifts of the Spirit, restoration in relationships, and a passion for doing the will of God.

Once each member of a cell is healthy and has a cell of his own, the same vision continues with the next level.  Now you will have 12 cells instead of 1.  In 5 X 5, 1 cell becomes 2, and 2 become 4.  In The Principle of 12, 1 cell becomes 12 cells, and 12 cells then become 144 cells.  A leader mentors 12; then his 12 each mentor 12.  Once each of these 12 have 12 leaders, the original leader has 144 leaders.  This level is called the “144.”

Patience is required because in the long run you will do much more in the Principle of 12 model, even though it seems to take off much slower than the 5 X 5 model.  The Principle of 12 model will take your church into true multiplication of leaders.
